Making Watercolor Paint from Natural Pigment
Join artist Judi Pettite for a hands-on exploration of pigment-making techniques, from earth and lake-based sources to a finished pan\watercolor. This workshop is perfect for artists working in painting, printmaking, textiles, installation, or anyone curious about handmade color from botanical sources. Together, we’ll follow the full paint-making process—from selecting raw materials to converting a dye into a pigment, drying and using a muller to convert the powder into paint. You'll learn the distinct characteristics of mineral and lake pigments, and how to incorporate them into your creative practice.
Each participant will take home a handmade set of water-based paints. Judi will provide shells to hold your paints, but feel free to bring your own containers or shells if you have favorites. A handout will include recipes and we’ll begin the day with a Powerpoint to provide an overview of the process.
